an early spring session at the beach
There’s something quietly lovely about spring sessions at the beach. Everyone associates seaside photos with golden sunsets and summer evenings, but honestly, the softer light and cooler air this time of year bring something completely different. Less dramatic perhaps, but far more natural.
This session was one of those shoots that just settled into itself from the start. No rushing, no pressure for perfect smiles, no trying too hard. Just a Mum and her little boy wandering along the shoreline together while I followed along with my camera.
It was actually R’s third session with me, which always feels special. He completely relaxed into it almost immediately, chatting away, showing me things he’d found, deciding when he wanted to run ahead and when he wanted to stay close to Mum.
Still cold enough to keep everyone bundled into jumpers which allows the images to feel natural, nothing overly polished which is probably why the images work so well.
And that’s the thing I love most about these sessions. They don’t need big sunsets or elaborate styling to feel meaningful. Sometimes it’s just a child holding his mum’s hand, a bit of wind in their hair, sandy shoes, and a later afternoon by the sea that felt easy and happy while it was happening.
Those are usually the photographs people come back to years later anyway.
